What You'll Learn

An CPR course typically teaches students how to interpret electrocardiogram readings, which are used to diagnose various heart conditions. The course may cover the following topics:

You will learn about the structure and function of the heart and lungs, and how they work together to circulate oxygen-rich blood throughout the body.

You will learn how to recognize the signs of a heart attack, cardiac arrest, and respiratory distress, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, and loss of consciousness.

Chest compressions are a critical part of CPR, and you will learn how to perform them correctly. This will include proper hand placement, the correct depth and rate of compressions, and how to adjust your technique for infants, children, and adults.

You will learn how to perform rescue breathing, also known as mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. This technique involves providing oxygen to the person in distress by blowing air into their lungs.

An AED is a device that delivers an electric shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm. You will learn how to use an AED and how to integrate it into your CPR efforts.

You will learn how to assess the safety of the situation and how to protect yourself and others from harm during the CPR process.

CPR is often a team effort, and you will learn how to work effectively with other responders and communicate effectively during an emergency.

You will learn about the legal and ethical issues surrounding CPR, such as consent, confidentiality, and liability.
